So I'm totally jet lagged and fatigued, but I'm in Hawaii! If I faint in my hotel, it's fine! I faint in Hawaii!

I miss my girlfriends Nancy and Lai Nam so much here. Every time I see a place we went to back in July-Aug, I think about them (fresh pineapple cases at the airport, peanut butter sandwich, ABC store, LeSportsac etc.) It seems so distant and surreal that we came here altogether just 1/2 year ago!

My flight was really early today from SFO and when I got to Hawaii I was starting to get headache so I had to take a nap. It's torturous to be in Hawaii and have to be working. I'm very sad >.<. Must take more personal days next time I come to Hawaii!!! And it totally doesn't help that my hotel Ala Moana is connected to the Ala Moana outdoor shopping center... My hunt for dinner 1.5 hours turned into 3 hours lol.

Gotta get cranking on work now so I can enjoy a little bit tomorrow!

I'm in San Francisco now.

Work is sooo tiring. I don't think they gave me enough time for training and learning. I was breaking down this weekend. I actually cried like 2-3 times. I'll have to speak to head office when I get back cuz I haven't stopped working since 1 month and have been getting on average 5-6 hours of sleep per day. But I have to admit it's one of a kind feeling to be in a different city every 2 weeks. Just a week ago I was looking up at the neon signs in Shinjuku and this week I was looking up at "San Francisco International" sign at the airport. Sometimes it's hard to believe it's real.

My first 10km (57 min)

I love working towards a goal and seeing my hard work pay off. I've realized recently that once I've set a goal, I'm usually good at focusing and working hard towards obtaining it. And if I don't succeed at first, I will try and try again (Aaliya's Try Again) until I reach it, or until I understand why and accept that I can't reach it. Stubborn, spoiled and persistent? Maybe. But definitely staying true to my beliefs and reasons why I've set that goal in the first place.

I've seen the fruits of my labour this year already back in July and August for dragon boat and taiko, and boy does it ever feel GREAT to have these accomplishments. It feels great to be healthy, fit AND achieve an objective (seeing the progression slowly). And now, I have reached my personal goal of running the 10km in an hour!

Who would've ever thought I'd run a 10k. Back in high school when we had to run a 1k, I was already huffing and puffing, trying to make it in around 5 minutes for marks...

Nancy and I pushed each other to sign up this year. Then we got Johnie, Lainam and Steve to join as well and created a Fb group to encourage each other. We even went to buy running shoes together!

Training and learning

Started training (not regularly) since April and only started seriously training 2 weeks before the race.

Through TJ, I learnt not to move my shoulders too much for long distance running, to conserve energy, to keep my feet low to the ground and body leaning a bit forward. He brought me along the canal and taught me to use google map to time myself.

This year, I also learnt to wear a hat when it's too sunny/hot. Learnt not to run in the hot afternoon sun (got heat stroked and had headache). Learnt to run with a small camel-back. Got a cute MEC blue camel-back (chosen by TJ) even though Steve ended up using it more than me... Learnt how to run with head phones. Got an ipod shuffle (loaded with Linkin Park, Daft Punk - Tron, and DJ Wilsobum mixes). And recent purchases? A Livestrong sportsbra (only had 1 sportsbra prior, and I believe Livestrong bracelet and symbol gives me extra power) and Under Armour shorts (which states on the label: Increased Power, Faster Recovery, Dry & Light. Needless to say, I was totally sold).

Since the weather got nicer back in April/May, I found the Lachine Canal and started training there. Running to dragon boat practice, past habitat 67 cubic houses (longest stretch) and onto the Jacques-Villeneuve circuit.

I still remember the first time running to dragon boat practice with Hung and Nana... Good thing Hung had his bike to switch with Nana half way.

Then I remember the second time running to dragon boat practice with Hung and Nancy... Again, Hung brought his bike and ended up running with me to the basin half way. Such a nice guy:) lol!

Running with Steve and observed a woman (I think God-sent) and a man running together and seeing their techniques - the man had longer strides, but the woman kept up perfectly by taking small but faster strides, using the calves and lower half of the legs more.

2 weeks prior

Getting training advices from TJ and training with Steve and Meng, I ran my practice 10k 1 week prior at the Olympic Basin (timed 57mins) with Nancy (after watching the Quebec Cup dragon boat races). I was able to keep a good pace of < 6min per k.

On Tuesday, Steve, Meng and I went to check out the first half of the route. 5km in 27mins. Half cursing Steve's fast pace and lack of hearing and half happy to be pushing myself... I ended up even more drained! So on Thursday, while Steve and Meng ran the second half of the course, I walked.

Marathon Day

First thought getting off the metro: SOOO many fit people! And I thought dragon boat was the only place for hot/fit people!

I was the first one out of our friends at the starting point thanks to Steve and Meng. (I am rarely early so Mr. Li allowed me the hall pass to rub this in as much as I want/can that day). And I just couldn't wipe the smile off my face that morning. It felt great to be amongst friends and amongst so many people and finally running for real in a marathon for the first time. I had high spirits knowing my friends and family were supporting me and encouraging me (thanks for all the text and Fb msgs).

Since this was the first time I registered, I didn't know how fast I can run, so I put myself under the 65-80min category. Starting off way in the back with Nancy, Mr. Li and Meng, we had to zig zag past so many people! It felt great! But I think my time probably could've been cut by 1-2minutes from this. Haha! Not to mention, we all had too little sleep.

It was a beautiful day to run. Not too hot, not cold, light breeze and beautiful scenery. At one part of the race (around 3rd or 4th k), you can see all the runners ahead of you with the Jacque-Cartier bridge in the distance and the sun coming from behind the clouds.

There were cheers from supporters all along the way. Encouraging signs and drum beats. A lady was even sitting on a ladder spraying her hose for us! There were kids running (like pros). Parents running with strollers. A guy in a wheelchair (whom I said good luck to as I passed by). The event was completely sold out!

When I first passed the starting line, with all the adrenaline rushing, my calves were already tight at the first 2 ks. But I didn't want to stop to massage them. (Note to self, must warm up EVERY part of the leg next time. Not just the thighs!) I was just hoping I could last all the way to the finish line. And if needed, I would think of everyone's encouragements (Mikio-san's in particular, hehe) to finish the last stretch. But I didn't even need it. The tension subsided and I was just enjoying running and looking at everything around me. Observing different runners, their pace, passing people, checking the km signs, checking my time, enjoying the music (great music totally helps!) and just pacing myself for the uphill after 6th k.

Seeing the 5km checkpoint (for the timed chip http://www.sportstats.ca) and at 29 minutes, I was content. And knowing that this was being tracked, it gave me the extra boost to keep going and to start thinking when I should pick up my pace, gauging if I had enough energy to pick before or after the hill.

Somewhere along the race, I found an older guy running at a similar pace to mine (I believe it was God sent) so I decided to follow behind him. (I thought maybe he can break the wind for me, and at the same time, I didn't have to use my concentration so much on pacing since he seemed to know what he was doing)! The race was so enjoyable that I didn't even see the 7th or 8th k signs. After the last turn, I decided it was time to try and push more (i.e. pick up the pace) at the last km. I knew I was going to be under an hour, but I wanted better. And... now my left knee hurts and I walk like a handicap... so slow, so inefficient... missing all the green lights at intersections...

Can't wait till next year!

2. Dimly lit room, perferably with differnt colours of light (e.g. christmas lights, bars, clubs). My only source of lights were the tall paper lampstand and my computer screen.

3. A friend or a bed.

ISO 200 f/20 5 sec

Key word search: kinetic photography

1. Set long exposure (the above pictures were set at 5 seconds)

2. Spin on the spot with your camera (becareful not to get too dizzy and nauseated...!)

Tip: try pointing camera in different directions for different affects (e.g. pointing it straight vs pointing it upwards)

I was always looking to further my education, interested in something different than my BA. It took me a while to find it, but I finally decided on pursuing a diploma in P.R.. Once found, the decision to engage in it was rather quick. I believe once you find something you know you want, then there is no hesitation, no excuses and you know you will be able to overcome all obstacles. Obstacles will just show themselves now as challenges.(I like to rub off of Yan's positive attitude towards dealing with "challenges". To him, I think it is almost like a fun game, proving to himself that he can overcome it.)

With the new knowledge and skills I will acquire, I hope I can eventually find a cause to passionately serve.

Was taking it easy tonight - still recovering from clubbing and partying this past Labour Day weekend and having my first day of class 6-9 after work - so just did a bit of blog surfing (you know, just clicking "next blog". you ever tried that? I can go on for a long time).

So I came across this scrapcard making blog.
I like it because it looks very easy to do, fairly quick and uses simple materials (no crazy cardstock or stamps).
And sometimes it's good to browse these sites because I just need a bit of inspiration/guidance to spark my creative mind which I lost after cegep.

Su/YooCanFly first introduced this anime to us on a wall in YK's basement, being streamed on a projector.
It is a bit slow (and perhaps a little annoying) in the beginning, but I was curious to see the aftermath of what a big earthquake in Japan would be like. And was happy to find out it was only 11 episodes (unlike... Naruto and those other anime which seems that it would never end).

My current wallpaper

I admit, I took an hour and a half searching for the perfect desktop wallpaper last night.

Seems silly of me to spend so much time and energy over a wallpaper. And taking this task so seriously.

I don't know why I do that either, but ever since owning my own computer in high school, I loved choosing/switching wallpapers to match my moods.

These few days I've been going for a lighter feel. And wanted something artsy or urban as inspiration. I think I wanted something light because I can already see stores putting out fall clothes, and with that comes colour tones a bit darker than summer. So, in an attempt to savour the last bits of our beautiful summer weather (not daring to think of the long and cold winters we have, although secretly excited for fall to come so I can pull out my soft shell), I opted for something whitish.

Mel lent me four books before she left Mtl. I am now down to one and a half.

I'm not even proud that I read all these books (I used to be proud when I can boast to Yan that I've been reading. To us, it is a luxury to be able to take time out of our busy lives to enjoy or to indulge in a novel. So I use the word proud to describe I've been "doing something productive and educational" with my time).

Yes, I wasn't even proud that I read two and a half books since Mel's departure. I don't need to feel that way anymore. I simply just couldn't put them down!

Was it me or did August just zoom by?

All the students are going back to school again. And so am I (taking two cont ed courses in the fall).

It's a sad end of "summer vacations" with beaches, BBQs and pool parties. Girls in bikinis and guys getting drunk. Chalets and kayaking/jet boating/dragon boating. Friends visiting from out of town.

But mixed with a new beginning! A fresh, busy (and perhaps sometimes a bit stressful) school year. Filled with weddings, bachelorettes, sleep overs and the gym (dun dun dummmmm).

Side note: I wonder why the artist chose to put the trees upside down?!
